Modern Toilet Restaurant in Taiwan

Modern Toilet is an unique bathroom-themed restaurant chain, based in Taiwan, with several branches throughout Asia. Everything in the 2,800-square-foot, three-storey restaurant is based on items from a bathroom. The chequered tile covered walls are adorned with shower heads, while plungers hang from the ceiling along with fæces-shaped lights. The chairs are actual unworking toilets, dishes are served on plastic miniature toilet bowls, and drinks in miniature urinals. Owner Wang Tzi-Wei opened Modern Toilet after the success of his ice cream shop that sold swirls of ice cream served in mini toilets. It is not odd for Taiwan to host restaurants with unusual themes. Taiwan also has eating locales that resemble jail houses and hospitals. (source: Wikipedia)

So I have come to visit one of their branches located in Ximending area in Taipei. Ximending also has been called the "Harajuku of Taipei" or the "Shibuya of Taipei". Ximending is the source of Taiwan's fashion, subculture, and Japanese culture.

You can easily locate the restaurant from the giant squat toilet hanging outside the building. If not, just ask around, Taiwanese people are so friendly. Upon reaching the doorstep of the restaurant, you will find a giant smiling poo statue waiting for you before stepping up to dining area. Inside, you will feels like entering into a giant bathroom, the dining table are actually real bathtub and sink with thick see through glass covered on top and the seat are actual size squat toilet with different design lid. The walls are tiled with shower head and also some poo-shape lights hanging from the ceiling.

Modern Toilet Taiwan

The food, all served in plates and bowls shaped like bathtub, sink, and of course squat toilet. For the drink, they serve in urine bottle like container. Some of the texture and color of the dishes served such as thick stew and curry just give you that little feeling of gross and unpleasant. Just imagine having your meal inside a toilet bowl. Even the ice cream is in poo-shaped. Well, that’s why they call it modern toilet right. Beside, not everyday you can dine into this kind of restaurant. Surprisingly all the food taste very good despite of their look.

This is how the curry looks like, served in a mini squat toilet

The rest of my friends ordered hot pot, where it still boiling upon served

Early on, i was wondering why the soup in the pot still boiling even it wasn't connected to electric socket or gas stove. In fact, you do have enough time to wait until your raw meat being completely cook. So i lift up the pot and found out actually there's a burning candle beneath the pot. What a good idea.

Wondering what are these yellow bookmark you saw earlier? You will be given a bookmark where you can write down your note/comment then just slide into the sink/bathtub table.

Even the hand washing sink was replaced with actual squat toilet. People might be mistaken when using it. But the toilet is just a normal toilet though.

Some souvenirs for sell

Is a must go restaurant when you have the chance to visit Taiwan. There's another different themed cafe that i have visited. One of the cafe also located in Ximending area. You might want to know more about it from my previous post on Taiwan Maid Cafe
